I tested every electric toothbrush on this list against each other. During every round of testing, factors like design, function, price, brush head size, travel-friendly features, speed options, modes, and technology were taken into account. The toothbrushes were used for a maximum of one week, once in the morning and once at night. This leads me to my favourite picks.
To find the best electric toothbrushes, we’ve tested how many different models?
For this guide we had our testers switch out their regular brush for each of the electric toothbrushes below, getting a gem of a grab of how the brushes performed in the real-world over a few weeks. Over the course of several weeks, our testers monitored how effectively each brush removed plaque and stuck-on food as well as how each felt in the hand, the ease of use of each brush’s app, the duration each lasted on a single charge and the ease with which they were recharged.
Our round-up brushes were tested in different mouths, including those of family and friends undergoing teeth-straightening with invisible braces and mouths sporting implants and sensitivity. Testers rated how clean they felt their teeth had been cleaned after one and two minutes and ranked the brushes for battery life, portability and comfort.
Electric toothbrush price and cost to replace brush heads It is certainly worthwhile checking online for off-brand replacements, especially for the most popular toothbrush brands, as some than the top-of-the-line models need costly replacement brush heads. While third-party brush heads come without quality assurance, we observed no difference in results when using them during testing.

How we selected products to test.?
Over the past decade or so, if you have attended routine dental appointments, you have most likely been encouraged to purchase an electric toothbrush. Nice and succinct, the dentist said that after a checkup a few years ago when our researcher asked him which brand he recommended. He said they’re all quite good.
This led to some solid discussion in /r/Dentistry about the fact that good technique is crucial even with an almighty toothbrush. This is exactly what you would expect from people who ultimately have a strong preference for one of the two biggest brands — Oral-B or Philips — but that preference is rooted in something other than one obvious preference or another.
Based on reviews we’ve read on Wirecutter, Techgearlab, and Dentaldorks, it was clear to us that the differences between brushes were going to be difficult to test. Even Consumer Reports, a near-legendary establishment for unbiased product comparisons that have frequently tested both toothbrushes and toothpaste, recently raised the white flag and stopped recommending individual brushes altogether.
The top brands are recognizable; they have TV commercials and YouTube influencers. As a race fan though, we wondered about rising contenders. So, so many other companies out there making brushes, but are any of them actually good? So on to our last list: three of our favourite best-selling underdog models which deliver big-brand features.
Since we found that heads on kid-specific models are largely the same as the “gentle” replacement heads manufactured for their “big” handle counterparts, we pitched a single “for-kids” category and tested brush systems that would serve an entire family.
By first cutting out old models and then analyzing reviews of the 23 most popular models, we boiled that list down to a group of 12 contenders that would hopefully give us the widest variety of test results.
Almost all of the brushes we picked up cost less than $10 and we’re powered by AA batteries (we figured, just for calibration, we’d include one of these midrange brushes), and we splurged on a couple of ultra-premium brushes as well (we figured we’d see what other people were offering for that kind of money).
This time, we steered clear of subscription services, largely because the newcomers feel a lot like the bigger brands without necessarily undercutting them on price. (For example, Goby charges you more than Oral-B but only gives you less for your money.)
